It's for all these reasons that people choose to apply for a Visitor Visa in order to come to New Zealand. 
However, getting approved for a visa can be confusing and difficult if you don't understand the ins and outs of the visa application process. This is where we can help. What is a Visitor Visa?

A Visitor Visa is a great option if you want to visit family and friends, or if you just want to explore New Zealand as a tourist on holiday for a decent amount of time. It’s a wonderful choice for young people looking for the means to enjoy the casual lifestyle of New Zealand, as well as having a chance to study abroad for a time.
This visa allows you to visit New Zealand from 6 months up to 9 months. You are permitted to study for up to 3 months during that time. Further, you are able to include your partner and/or children in this visa application. 

Who can apply and what do they need?

Decent health

The applicant has to be in decent health (they may be required to provide proof of an X-ray examination and a medical examination) as well as of upstanding moral character (they may be required to provide police certification). 

Intentions

Honest intentions for traveling to New Zealand may be asked of the applicant during the application process.

Funds

Sufficient funds to cover the applicant’s time in New Zealand is also mandatory (NZD $1,000 for every month the applicant is in New Zealand OR $400 if accommodation has already been provided/paid for). An acceptable sponsor must be provided if the applicant cannot meet these obligations.

Exit plan

The applicant must provide proof that they will be leaving New Zealand at the end of their stay. This may include things like a ticket showing your departure date from New Zealand.  

If a sponsor is included, what are their responsibilities?

They must cover things such as accommodation and general welfare including daily necessities and healthcare. Proof of this must be provided.

If the applicant does not have enough funds to cover things such as returning to their country, the sponsor must pay for this. This will include cases such as deportation (if applicable).

What is needed if an applicant wants to include their partner and/or children?

    The applicant will need to provide proof of the relationship which can include things such as a marriage certificate or a document showing your names combined to prove shared residency. Proof of decent health (they may need to provide proof of an X-ray examination and medical examination) and upstanding moral character (they may need to provide police certification) will be needed.

    Dependent children must be 19 years old or younger. The applicant must provide proof of their relationship with the child/children (this can include proof like birth certificates) as well as proof of the child/children’s identity (this can include proof like passports). Finally, the child/children must be of decent health (they may need to provide proof of an X-ray examination and medical examination) and of upstanding moral character (they may need to provide police certification).

Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa

This visa provides a means for you to visit and be with your children or grandchildren for a longer period of time.

What is the Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa?

It allows you to visit your children/grandchildren for up to 6 months at a time (18 months over 3 years). Further, you are permitted to travel in and out of New Zealand as well as include your partner in the application. Please note a sponsor is required for the parent/grandparent applicant.

Who can apply and what do they need?

Location

Applicants need to be living outside of New Zealand.

Health

Applicants must be in good health and be able to prove that.

Intention

Applicants must have a genuine reason to travel to New Zealand.

Visa cost: NZD $441.00


Who can be a sponsor?

  • The children or grandchildren of the applicant. 


  • If the children/grandchildren are younger than 17 years of age, then their parent/guardian can be the sponsor. 


  • They must be a New Zealand citizen or resident. 


  • They cannot be sponsoring anyone else

Parent Boost Visitor Visa

The Parent Boost Visitor Visa is a means for parents and grandparents to stay united and close to their family living in New Zealand. It should be noted that it is NOT a pathway to residency, though there are certainly other options for that. This visa is meant to bring families together over long periods of time.

  • What is the Parent Boost Visistor Visa?

    It is designed to let parents/grandparents visit their family living within New Zealand for up to 5 years. A sponsor is required for the parent/grandparent applicant. 

  • Who can apply?

    Parents/grandparents who must have a child or grandchild living in New Zealand who is either biologically theirs or their adopted (grand)child/(grand)children.

    Further, applicants must be in decent health (a chest X-ray and medical examination may be required with proof provided) and of upstanding moral character (police certification may be required).

Who can be a sponsor and what are their requirements?

  • A sponsor must be the biological/adopted child of the applicant so a familiar connection is mandatory. 

  • They must also be a citizen or resident of New Zealand. 

  • Further, the sponsor must be able to be financially responsible for the applicant during their stay. This includes accommodation, healthcare and any incurring costs involved in possible issues such as deportation (if it applies).

What sorts of funds are required?

Only ONE of the following needs to be fulfilled to qualify

Median wage threshold

A sponsor must earn at the very least, the New Zealand median wage. In the case of joint sponsors, this is increased to 1.5 above the median wage. Additionally, for every additional parent the median increases by 0.5.

Income

Personal income must be NZD $32,611.28 gross per annum (for a single parent) or NZD $49,552.88 (for a couple), or

Funds

Personal funds must contain NZD $160,000 (for a single parent) or NZD $250,000 (for a couple).

What about healthcare?

A sufficient amount of money is required by the applicant for healthcare and health insurance. 


They must have at the very least 1 year’s worth to cover things such as emergency medical care (NZD $250,000 a year) and cancer treatment (NZD $100,000). This also ensures the financial cover of things such as repatriation and return of remains (if applicable)

How many times can a visa holder re-enter New Zealand?

Unlimited for the duration

This is a multi-entry visitor visa so the visa holder will be able to enter and exit New Zealand as they please during the designated visa time duration. 

Important note

However, it should be noted that the visa holder will be obligated to leave New Zealand during the 3rd year for a medical assessment. 

Will the visa holder be able to study or work?

  • They will be able to study for up to three months. 

  • As for work, they will be permitted to work remotely for an off-shore employer. 

Guardian Visitor Visa

This visa is for legal guardians/parents who want to be with their child/children on a Student Visa while in NZ.
While on this visa, it allows the legal guardian/parent to visit/stay with/care for their child while they are a student. They can also explore and tour NZ as a visitor. Finally, they are able to work part-time as well as study (depending on the conditions of their visa). 

The requirements of this visa:

    You must have a child on an NZ student visa aged 17 and under. They must be enrolled in years 1 - 13. 

  • Legal guardian


    You must be the legal guardian of this child. 

  • Funds


    You must have at least $1000 NZD for each month you are here or $400 a month if you already have paid accomodation. 

  • Exit plan


    You must have plans to leave NZ before your visa has expired.

  • Character check


    You must be of good health and decent character. This may require a police clearance certificate and/or a medical examination/chest x-ray.

  • Intentions


    You must have genuine reasons for coming to NZ.

  • Important note


    ● Only 1 visa will be issued to a legal guardian/parent at any given time, even if there is more than 1 child studying in NZ. ● If you want to bring your partner and other children with you, they must acquire their own visa.

Child of a New Zealander Visitor Visa

If you are a New Zealand citizen or resident, this visa allows your dependent child to visit you for up to 9 months. Further, you will be able to send your child to school or tertiary educational providers for up to 3 months. 
Note: If you want your child to be able to study for longer than 3 months, they will need to apply for a Student Visa. 

What is needed to acquire this visa?

NZ status

You must be a NZ citizen or resident.

Parent

You must be the parent of the child who is applying for the visa. 

Financial support

You must be able to be financially responsible for the child during their stay, or they must have an acceptable sponsor. 

Relationship status

Your child must be single. 

Exit plan

You must have plans for your child to leave NZ before their visa expires.

Good health and character

Your child must be healthy and of upstanding moral character. 

Age

Your child must be 19 or younger with no children of their own, or they can be between 20 - 24 and have applied for the appropriate/eligible visa.

Intent

Your child must have genuine reasons for coming to NZ.

Child of a Student Visitor Visa

Your child can apply for this visa if you are currently on a Student Visa in NZ. They will be able to join you for the duration of your Student Visa. Further, they will be able to study for up to 3 months.

What do you need to obtain this visa?

  • Visa status

    You must have a Student Visa.

  • Parent

    You must be the parent of the child applying for this visa.

  • Finances

    You must be financially responsible for the child during their stay ($1000 NZD for each month they are here, or $400 NZD if they have paid accommodation), or they must have an acceptable sponsor. 

  • Character check

    Your child must be of good health and moral character. 

  • Intent

    Your child must have genuine reasons for coming to NZ.

  • Exit plan

    There must be plans for your child to leave before their visa expires. 

  • Age

    Your child must be 19 years of age or younger, and have no children of their own. 

  • Other details

    ● If you wish for your child to study more than 3 months, they will have to apply for a Student Visa. ● You can apply for your Student Visa at the same time as your child's visa. They will not receive their visa until you have been approved for yours.

Child of a Worker Visitor Visa

Your child may be eligible for this visa if you currently have a Work Visa. This would allow your child to stay with you for the duration of your visa, as well as study for up to 3 months. 
You can apply for this visa at the same time as applying for your work visa. However, your child will not receive their visa until your visa has been approved.

What do I need to acquire this visa?

Visa status:You must have an appropriate work visa.

Parent: You must be able to prove you are the legal parent of the applicant child. 

Relationship status:Your child must be single.

Character check:Your child must be of good moral standing and in decent health. 

Finances:Further, they must be financially dependent on you (or they must have an appropriate sponsor). You must also be earning enough money to support your dependent child.
